Following its acclaimed sold-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre, prepare to welcome The Unfriend to the West End for a strictly limited run at the Criterion Theatre.
This riotous dark comedy from writer Steven Moffat and director Mark Gatiss, the award-winning team behind BBC’s Sherlock, stars an uproarious cast including Reece Shearsmith (Inside No. 9), Amanda Abbington (Sherlock) and Frances Barber (Silk).
While on holiday Peter and Debbie befriend Elsa: a lusty, Trumploving widow from Denver, USA. She’s less than woke but kind of wonderful. They agree to stay in touch - because no one ever really does, do they? When Elsa invites herself to stay a few months later, they decide to look her up online. Too late, they learn the truth about Elsa Jean Krakowski. Deadly danger has just boarded a flight to London! What began as a casual holiday friendship is now a threat to the lives of their children. Peter and Debbie now face the ultimate challenge of the modern world - how do you protect all that you love from mortal peril without seeming a bit impolite? Because guess who’s coming… to MURDER.

Great British Comedy
16 April 2023
Loved the cosy Criterion theatre. Our 'partitial restricted view' seats were great for us as the brass safty rail 'in eyeline' didnt impact our view much at all. Enjoyed the small & very hard working cast of this comedy with clever scenery which meant very few scene changes. It was funny & very clever but not sure I can agree with 'hilarious' as the ads say. It was a little too much of a fast for my personal taste, had me squirming at times - but this is due to great writing & acting.

Very amusing play in lovely theatre

My friend and I enjoyed the show very much. We found the play very amusing and this was all highlighted by the very good use of body language and hand gestures for those of us seated some way back. Would thoroughly recommend.

Hilarious and so very, very British
27 March 2023
A laugh out loud performance which perfectly picked up on the polite manners of the middle-class British, even when faced with murder! Having a teenage children, I could totally relate to the family life played out and the 'phone ringing' incident was not only hysterical but also, spot on. A brilliant cast with excellent comedy timing.

The performance was really well played but the script was extremely cringe-worthy, obvious and full of nail grindingly awfull family cliche moments.

Definitely worth booking up for!! Attended last night and it was very funny. Quick witted with an astonishing cast. I want to book up again to see the play that has been cleverly written and directed by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss before it finishes.

Clever script but disappointing
26 January 2023
There were some clever lines in a otherwise rather old-fashioned production. The cast, and particularly the younger members, performed well but overall the play was a pleasant experience but not a memorable one.

great fun, but twisted!
19 January 2023
Very clever, slightly macabre and twisted plot but well written and great fun. The audience, including ourselves, laughed a lot. If you like "Inside No 9 series" on tv, you will enjoy this, a longer version with great acting by the small cast of 7. Clever words, brilliant "mouldy teneager" and fun to see a dysfunctional family! Lovely theatre, too
