'She’s like no one I’ve ever met... She’s like fire and water all at once.'

Experience the Royal Shakespeare Company’s hotly anticipated world premiere production of Maggie O’Farrell’s HAMNET now playing at London’s Garrick Theatre following a sell-out run in Stratford-upon-Avon.

‘Pure theatre gold’ Mail on Sunday

Warwickshire, 1582. Agnes Hathaway, a natural healer, meets the Latin tutor, William Shakespeare. Drawn together by powerful but hidden impulses, they create a life together and make a family. When the plague steals 11-year-old Hamnet from his loving parents, they must each confront their loss alone. And yet, out of the greatest suffering, something of extraordinary wonder is born.

Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s best-selling book and adapted by award-winning playwright Lolita Chakrabarti (Life of Pi, Red Velvet, Hymn), Hamnet pulls back a curtain on the story of the greatest writer in the English language and the woman who was the constant presence and purpose of his life.

Directed by Erica Whyman, with Set Design by Tom Piper, Lighting by Prema Mehta, Sound by Simon Baker, Music by Oğuz Kaplangi, Movement by Ayse Tashkiran, Fights by Kate Waters and Casting by Amy Ball CDG, Hamnet is a love letter to passion, birth, grief and the magic of nature.

Now playing at London’s Garrick Theatre for a limited season until 17 February 2024.

Clever production. Minimal scenery but beautifully positioned and the scene changes were easily and swiftly managed. I loved the little touches such as the way in which the 'appearance' of Anne's children after birth was managed. The play was, I think, easier to follow if you have read the book (my friend hadn't) - and the only bit that was a something of a disappointment to me was the final scene where I felt a bit underwhelmed.

Brilliant adaptation that brings to life the book and reveals powerful motivations for the Bard's reflections on life love and death

  • Followed the script but lacked the emotion

    10 November 2023

Maggie O’Farrell’s book Hamnet is well researched with multiple layers of emotion, giving the story of an apparently simple country girl and a well educated young man.. The play followed the script well but failed, in the first half to provide any convincing passion or depth. The second half was more ch better, covered more of the text and offered some moving scenes. Overall I felt the cast lacked compassion, leaving the performance a little flat and lacking in depth

  • Boring

    25 October 2023

Very dull, nothing happens. Apparently you get more our of it if you‘ve read the book. Not at all worth the ticket price. So much other good stuff to see in london. Real disappointment
